In school, many times students will not read beyond what is listed on the syllabus. They will do the bare minimum, and even then it can be a battle, as many students skim past the majority of the reading in search of questions and answers.
That said, it can be difficult to motivate students and create a passion for reading. But with every difficulty, there is a way to overcome it. There are some strategies you can apply to create a passion for reading in your students. In addition to the tips below, be sure to also implement these methods into any education based skills testing as well.
Showcase Your Reading Passion:
Share your experience of reading books. Give references from the various books whenever you get a chance to do so. Share the names of interesting books by different authors. Quote from the books of great authors while giving notes.
This will let your students know how passionate a reader you are and how your teaching style differs from the other teachers. Students always try to follow the teachers they love and respect. This will definitely create a passion for reading in them.
Encourage Reading Books to Pass Time:
After a difficult topic, give your students a break by telling them interesting and motivating stories from different books. Let them know how useful books are even if one reads them for pleasure to pass the time.
Invite Renowned Authors in the Programs:
In the school or college programs, invite renowned teachers to speak. They will share their experience, knowledge, and love of reading and writing. They are good examples of how one can change his life if he can create a passion for reading. Students will get inspiration from their life stories.
Involve Parents in This Matter Too:
Without the parents’ involvement, this mission cannot be successful. Encourage the parents to be passionate readers, encouraging the passion in their children. If a student finds that his/her teachers, as well as his/her parents, are passionate readers then he/she will feel a strong motivation to be a passionate reader as well.
Guide the Students in the Book Selection:
Not every book may suit every person. If the students select books that do not match their psychology at the very beginning, it can strangle the motivation for reading books.
As a teacher, you know your students. You know their taste and the level of knowledge and maturity. So, help them choose the right books best suitable for them.
Encourage Spending more Time in the Library:
Encourage the students to spend more time in the library. Spending time in the library exposes them to various, interesting books. The library has a different ambiance that motivates a reader to collect more and more treasures of knowledge.
Make them Aware of the Utilities of Reading Books:
Reading books always enriches our lives in many ways. Make your students aware of benefits of the reading books.
Tell them the following:
They can use great quotes from different books to enrich their answers on the tests.
Reading books not only increases knowledge but also enhances wisdom.
They can get to know the world largely by reading various books.
These will surely motivate your students to create a passion for reading books.
Discuss the Reading Strategies:
As a teacher, you know the most effective strategies to be applied to make reading interesting and to make the knowledge permanent. Share your reading strategies with your students. No doubt, your students will benefit from this.
If you can create the passion for reading in the students, you will not only help them enrich their knowledge, but also there will be a possibility of getting good future teachers among your students.
